The Washington State Labor Council (WSLC) convention was a huge success this year over July 21-23 at the convention center in Wenatchee, with more than 300 delegates from unions across Washington state in attendance, including firefighters, ironworkers, nurses, and transit drivers. Our president, Sarina Roher, gave a moving speech about her journey in the labor movement.
A variety of resolutions were passed on topics including data centers, protections for farm workers, and labor's endorsement of MGP. These resolutions are not only a call to action, but also demonstrate labor's support for these priorities as they move through the Washington State Legislature. Delegates also reviewed the Paid Family and Medical Leave Act (PFMLA), a law that has provided important protections for so many of our members and caregivers, and one that we do not want to lose.
There was also a workshop on the new law requiring workplace accommodations for women experiencing menopause symptoms. More information and ideas for accommodations on this often-overlooked topic will be shared in the future.
A moment of silence was held for the victims of the Nippon Packaging plant tragedy, including eleven union members who were fathers, husbands, and labor activists.
Consider joining the Southwest Washington Central Labor Council or the Longview Labor Council and running to be a delegate at a future convention. This is a great opportunity to grow our presence into Southwest Washington and to ensure we are raising our voice on both sides of the state border!
