August 11th
Thank you so much to all who attended the rally—we were able to demonstrate in force that WE SHOW UP!!! At the end of the day, our unified front is our MOST IMPORTANT WEAPON against the corporate greed of KP.
It has come to our attention that Kaiser has already started the process of hiring scab nurses to backfill for a potential strike. This is outrageous! It not only undermines our good-faith bargaining efforts, but it also shows that KP would rather pay premium dollar to travelers than provide the fair-market wages we deserve. 🚽🚽💰💰
Today included TAs on our Charge RN language as well as on our article on Corrective Action. Both of these inch us ever closer to an equitable and competitive contract. WHY AREN’T WE TALKING ABOUT THE MONEY?? you ask? A valid question. KP continues to evade our economic inquiries. 🤮 Their rare and evasive answers insult the very profession of nursing in Oregon. Rest assured, friends! We will not let their smoke and mirrors distract us from our commitment to securing the wages, benefits, and contract we deserve. If we have to picket, we will. If we have to walk, we will.
One of KP’s tactics is to omit essential tidbits of our proposals from their counterproposals as if they never existed. We plan to distribute an example of this erroneous practice among the units shortly. Keep an eye out!
Now is our time, comrades! Let’s hold their feet to the fire! #REDUP

August 4th
Today was a joint bargaining day with our OFNHP RN siblings—and it was a busy one!
We kicked things off with our facilitator, Gary, working with both labor and management to help move us closer on some key joint proposals.
Our focus today was on Seniority, and we’re happy to report that we made great progress. We’re feeling optimistic and hopeful that we’ll be able to reach an agreement soon!
Our next bargaining session is scheduled for Monday, August 11—stay tuned, or better yet, register to be an observer and see it in action! 😁
This is a full week for us:
As you know, I typically hold an ONA Town Hall, but tonight we have a Labor Caucus for National Bargaining, so I won’t be able to host the Town Hall this evening.
Please stay tuned and stay red up—this is a big week for all of us!
📍National Bargaining is happening all week right here in Portland, and don’t forget:
Rally Day is this Thursday! Let’s show up and show out!
July 25th
Wishing you all a happy and fruitful summer!
The ONA bargaining team met for the tenth time with management today to pave a better way forward. Our time today included pushing our latest edits on Leaves of Absence, Charge RN, and Hours of Employment language. This brings us super close to three more tentative agreements with management.
As many of you may already know, we have very few bargaining sessions left to ensure an equitable and competitive contract. Though we most definitely plan to schedule more time at the table, we’re nearing a critical phase of this process: BATTON DOWN THE HATCHES; IT’S GOOOOO TIIIIMMMMME, BABY!! We need to show KP management that we are a united, unstoppable wave of change. What can you do to support the cause, you might ask? Here is a list:
⁃ Show up as an observer at one of our local bargaining days. Click here to find upcoming dates and RSVP as an observer.
⁃ Join our table at the KP-sponsored Sunday Parkways this weekend to educate our community on what we’re fighting for at the table. Click here to sign up for a time or reach out to hwinchester@ofnhp.org for more info.
⁃ Bring your friends and family and join our OFNHP sibs at the August 7th rally to support the national table. We’re also participating in a whole week of action August 4th- 8th and need your strength to make it great! See link here to RSVP for the rally and check out this page to see how you can get involved in each day’s activities for the full week of action.
⁃ SPREAD THE WORD. The more members we have in the know, the stronger our front will be.
⁃ Ask questions. Continue to challenge the KP way by bringing issues into the limelight.
⁃ RED UP, RED UP, and RED UP.
Our contract expires September 30th. We can’t stress this enough: strike is always a possibility. We, together, decide if this action is necessary to win a contract that makes us proud to work for KP. Please continue to stash away your pennies. In all honestly, the ONA bargaining team has made solid strides towards getting this thing in the bag, but we are also accountable to our sibling unions under the OFNHP umbrella. We all stand best when we stand together.
Next bargaining session: 07/30–starting at 1000
Next joint bargaining session: 08/04
NO town-hall meeting tonight!!
Yours in Solidarity,
Rachel, Jenn, Rory, and Ally

July 9th
Today, our bargaining team was back at the table with management once again fighting for the contract you deserve. We started the day in a long caucus because management needed to get themselves together.
They then came to the table with what’s called a package proposal. What’s a package? It’s when management bundles multiple articles together and says, “This is what we’re willing to work with.”
This package included 13 articles:
- Article 3 – Association Security
- Article 7 – Definitions ✅ TA reached!
- Article 8 – Compensation
- Article 9 – Hours of Employment and Overtime
- Article 10 – Scheduling and Staffing
- Article 13 – Holidays
- Article 20 – Leaves of Absence
- Article 26 – Seniority
- Article 27 – Grievance Procedure
- Article 28 – Corrective Action
- Charge Nurse Language
- Article 30 – Probationary Period ✅ TA reached!
We’re excited to share that we reached tentative agreements (TAs) on Article 7 and Article 30 — a great step forward! It may be a small step, but it showed some partnership work.
Before we celebrate too much, though, we need to talk about what was left out. Management has made it clear they have no interest in discussing the following key articles:
- Article 11 – Sick Leave
- Article 12 – Vacation
- Article 15 – Bereavement
- Article 21 – Education
- Article 25 – Orientation and Career Ladder
The tone at the table was respectful and the conversations were productive — but let’s be honest: it’s frustrating and disheartening that management continues to dismiss the importance of our work-life balance.
And perhaps the most alarming: in Article 8 – Compensation, they completely crossed out our entire market wage adjustment proposal.
When I challenged them on this, I asked directly:
“What are you trying to tell our members? Because when I see this, it tells me that I don’t matter — that I’m disposable.”
If Kaiser truly wants to be a market leader, they need to show up and invest in us — the people who keep this organization running every day.
We will continue fighting for a contract that reflects your value, your contributions, and your dignity. Stay tuned for more updates, red up on Tuesdays, and as always, thank you for standing strong with us. Make sure to also RSVP for our August 7th rally!
June 12th
Happy summer to you all! Today marked our 6th bargaining session, where we continued to advocate for our members’ priorities. It’s never too late to share your questions or concerns about the contract — please reach out to your ONA representatives any time!
National bargaining is also in full swing. This is where decisions about pay, benefits, and retirement are made — outcomes that will shape and support our local economic proposals. Portland will host the national bargaining table August 5th-7th, and we’re planning a big rally on August 7th to show our strength and solidarity. Stay tuned for details!
We’re also continuing to partner with the OFNHP RN bargaining team as we prepare for our first-ever joint bargaining session on June 19th. This is a historic step, and we’ll keep you updated on both our shared wins and challenges.
As for today, we passed several counter-proposals to KP management, including updates to articles on corrective action, probationary periods, and scheduling/staffing processes. We also introduced new language addressing the ethical management and implementation of AI in our workplaces — a critical first step as this technology becomes a growing part of healthcare.
Observers are always welcome! See the details below to get involved.
RED UP!
🗓️ First Joint Bargaining Date: 06/19/25
🗓️ Next ONA Bargaining Date: 06/25/25
May 22nd
oday marked our fifth day of bargaining with KP management, where we continued to push for our members' priorities.
We’re excited to soon join our OFNHP siblings at the bargaining table for two joint sessions to strengthen our shared positions. This will bring all members of both bargaining teams — 18 brains! — together at one table. More updates to come soon, but know that this will give us a huge advantage in building reciprocity between bargaining groups.
Today, the bargaining team successfully pushed all remaining non-joint proposals across the table, marking a major milestone. This included language to better define our on-call positions, clarify processes around corrective actions, and provide greater transparency on overtime and working hours.
Management responded with counters on holidays and holiday pay, the definition of Charge RNs, and leaves of absence. At this point, all of our priorities are on the table — now it’s nose to the grindstone time with the red pen.
Please reach out to your bargaining team with any questions, and RED UP, RED UP, RED UP!
Next bargaining date: 06/12/2025
April 17th
Another day of bargaining done and done! ✅
Management proposed making changes to the language in our contract on the grievance process. They also offered a counter-proposal to our offer regarding streamlining seniority language jointly with OFNHP RN bargaining unit.
We spent some collective time in a question and answer session with Shannon Surber, a KP executive, on the impending rollout of Kronos to replace API at some point next year. This is especially important for us as we redefine scheduling and Wish List language.
Labor proposed updating our contract regarding making a clearer and more supportive orientation process, and there will be more information to come. Lastly, we provided a counter-proposal to management on the implementation of an internal OR RN Fellowship.
Lots of pending proposals, and more to come!
Town hall tonight for updates at 7:00pm. Details are below.

April 4th
We attended our second bargaining session today with moderate success across the table. Spirits remained high as both sides rolled out how to prioritize our time together in the coming weeks. Management continued to be cordial and respectful of all proposals we brought forward.
We made solid, collective progress on cleaning up Article 10 (i.e. scheduling and the ‘wish list’), inching nearer to the close of one of our more challenging contract articles.
Labor proposed changes to our contract on bereavement leave, specifically around the number of days to be allotted in the event of a death of a loved one, as well the distance required to travel to qualify for extra bereavement days. This included the presentation of written testimony from a few of our members not present at the bargaining table.
Management proposed new language on making staffing during holidays and prime time more equitable -- We plan to buckle down with a fine-toothed comb and scrutinize their every word. TBD!
Reminder that there is a town hall on April 17th at 7:00pm. All are welcome! Link is below.

We made it through our first day of bargaining today. Phew! Morale was good throughout, and both sides attended with respect and mutual interest. This time included introductions of both labor and management, set our ground rules, listed common interests, and offered opening statements from the primary negotiators on each side of the table. We were also able to make the following progress:
- Labor proposed changes to our current contract on issues around Seniority, as well as updating muddled language regarding the role of Charge RNs.
- Management proposed changes to our current contract, specifically on implementing an OR Fellowship program and changing our current probationary period from 90 to 180 days. They also proposed altering our contract language around altering start times, per the OFNHP
Our plan is to red pen each of their proposals line by line, while we wait for their responses. Next bargaining session: Friday, April 4th.
We are also launching regular tele-town halls for you to receive updates about bargaining. We are starting April 17th at 7:00pm and they will last for an hour. Check the zoom information below to attend, and below that will be a complete list of tele-town hall dates.
