The 2024 Democratic National Convention (DNC) was held in Chicago, Illinois, a historic center of the labor movement in the United States. The Oregon Delegation, consisting of 78 members, included 20 union representatives from 13 different unions, many affiliated with the Oregon AFL-CIO. Among the delegates was our very own OFNHP AFT 5017 member April Milan, a Physical Therapist at Sunnyside Medical Center and active member of our PEAC.
When not attending the convention’s remarkable speeches from Democratic leaders, Oregon delegates engaged in organizing efforts with prominent figures such as Randi Weingarten, President of AFT; Liz Shuler, President of AFL-CIO; Oregon State Senators and House Representatives; Congresswoman Andrea Salinas and Suzanne Bonamici; U.S. Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley; Oregon Governor Tina Kotek; Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum; and State Treasurer Tobias Read.
Highlights of the DNC included an exhilarating Roll Call, with Democratic Party of Oregon Chair Rosa Colquitt casting Oregon’s 78 votes to nominate Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic Party’s Presidential candidate. Governor Tim Walz accepted the Vice-Presidential nomination and delivered a rousing pep talk, and Vice President Harris gave a powerful acceptance speech, uniting the Harris-Walz ticket on stage.
