At our August 7th rally, healthcare professionals, union members, and community allies will gather in downtown Portland for a Rally to Support Patient Care and Healthcare Workers at Kaiser. The event is being organized by the Oregon Federation of Nurses and Health Professionals (OFNHP, AFT Local 5017, AFL-CIO) as part of a nationwide effort to demand safe staffing, fair wages, and a strong voice for healthcare workers on the job.
The rally coincides with Alliance of Healthcare Unions national bargaining sessions in Portland, bringing together workers from across the country who are part of the 60,000-member Alliance of Health Care Unions currently in negotiations with Kaiser Permanente. Workers say that despite some movement at the negotiating table, Kaiser leadership has moved slowly and are often unprepared, unwilling to discuss issues that matter, or offering proposals that are out of step with the needs of their employees.
“This fight is about patient safety, about dignity on the job, and about ensuring the people who provide care can afford to care for themselves and their families,” said Sarina Roher, President of OFNHP. “Our communities deserve better, and it’s going to take all of us — healthcare workers, unions, and community members — standing together to make it happen.”
The event will feature speeches from frontline healthcare workers, members of the bargaining team, community activists, and political leaders. It will also include allied unions and advocacy groups such as the Oregon AFL-CIO, Jobs With Justice, and other healthcare advocacy organizations showing solidarity in this critical fight.
All union members, Kaiser patients, healthcare workers, and community supporters are encouraged to attend.
Please RSVP if you plan on attending and let us know if you're an OFNHP member, a member of an outside organization or church, if you are a member of a different union, if you're a healthcare worker or a Kaiser patient.
