Tom Price will Dismantle the ACA

A message from AFT President Randi Weingarten:

This week, the Senate chose to use its first legislative action in the new Congress to take away something from millions of Americans. Senate Republicans forced a vote in the middle of the night to authorize repeal of the Affordable Care Act without a replacement. Actions speak louder than words, and President-elect Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress have shown that they are determined to dismantle all the progress we have made in expanding health coverage for millions of Americans.

Trump has nominated Tom Price to carry out his destructive policies as head of the Department of Health and Human Services. Price would turn programs such as Medicare and Medicaid, relied on by millions, into vouchers and block grants, while gutting protections for LGBTQ people, women and the most vulnerable Americans.

We have a moral obligation to fight Price’s nomination. Click here to add your name to our petition today.

AFT clinicians on the frontlines of healthcare have seen firsthand how the ACA has saved lives. Putting the Department of Health and Human Services under the control of an opponent not only of the ACA, but also of the Children's Health Insurance Program, Medicare and Medicaid as we know them, threatens to undo that progress and then some—making Americans of every generation more vulnerable, and putting the health of millions at risk.

This Sunday, Jan. 15, activists nationwide will be coming together to let Congress know we want to protect the gains made under the Affordable Care Act. AFT members throughout the country are joining rallies, leafleting in their worksites, and making calls to Congress to raise our voices for our patients, for our families and for our communities. If we’re serious about protecting the ACA, we must also fight to keep Price from being confirmed.

You can add your voice by signing our petition today—we’ll deliver it to Congress when the Price confirmation hearings begin.
